John A. Floden

John A. Floden, 90, of Sumner, died Monday, November 5, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 9, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Sumner with Rev. Robert Burchfield officiating. Interment will be in Wilson Grove Cemetery, rural Sumner.  Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 8, 2012, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Friday. Memorials may be made in his name to either First Baptist Church or the Sumner City Park.  

John Alfred Floden, son of Richard and Myrtle Goodwin Floden, was born November 12, 1921, in Nashua, Iowa. He was baptized at the Baptist Church in Elgin. He received his education in the Fredericksburg, Nashua, and Waverly Schools, graduating from Waverly High School in 1938 as class salutatorian. He later attended Iowa State University in Ames. On October 10, 1942, he was united in marriage with Irma Jane Foster at the Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shifflett home in Waterloo. John did carpentry work and farmed in the Sumner area for many years. Over the years, he had been a member of the First Baptist Church and also Faith Evangelical Church, both in Sumner. He had also been a member of the Christian Businessmen’s group and enjoyed gardening and doing crafts.

John is survived by his children, Patricia (Ray) Fox of Waterloo, Jon (Debbie) Floden of D’Iberville, Mississippi, David (Kathy) Floden of Van Meter, Ronald (Wanda) Floden of Sterling, Virginia, Diane (Jim) Sterba of Sumner, Donna Floden of Possum Trot, Kentucky, and Merri (Johnny) Tucker of Sumner; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha Kolarich of Godfrey, Illinois and Marlyn (Ralph) Boleyn of Washburn; one brother, Glen (Ginny) Floden of St. Peters, Missouri; and one sister-in-law, Juanita Floden of Mt. Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma on January 13, 2006; one son, Robert on March 11, 2009; one brother, Louis; and one brother-in-law, Robert Kolarich.
